Exclamation How do you replace dashlights on 1986 Ford Bronco?

My left dome light (displays fuel, temperature, battery charge, and oil pressure) isn't working. I need to replace this lightbulb. How do I do it?
Now, I know you have to take out all the screws that hold it in, but I believe there are cables that hold these gauges in place. What do I do to replace the bulb? Also it seems that the gauges themselves are not working. If you can answer this, it would also be helpful.

You must tip it toward you from the top and unhook the speedo cable. The bulbs are obvious to how they come once you see the back of it. As for all the gauges not working I reconmend to buy some electrical connector cleaner and or contact cleaner and spreay the connections. Everytime I repair something on my truck I do this and have great results. When I first bought my truck the wiring was horrible no dome lights gauges and all that fun stuff. Just take your time and you will get it also you change the color from green to something different the bulds are easy to get your hands on in different colors now.

Same here only mine is an 1985 Bronco II, the gages do work though. Does anyone know if it would be the same for changing the light on the dash, I would think so considering they are a year apart but do not know for sure.

It's tons of fun. After removing all the screws you have to pull the gauge panel out. On the back are two electrical plugs that you squeeze the two tabs on the ends then the real problem is the Speedometer cable. This you push the plastic conector to one side and pull the cable out. This is how I have to do it or I invariably miss the bulb that's out. I've had to do this with the Broncos I've had and the Aerostar I have at home.

And if it's an automatic on the tree, don't forget about the shift indicator. Another great design.

i just replaced all the bulbs on my 86 bII a few weeks ago. just take the 6 or 7 screws out i tilted it forward and pulled each bulb out and replaced them, might as well do them all while its apart. just like "bronco2424" said, use some type of contact cleaner,it makes a big difference

Actually the best way with the most side benefits is to engage a 10 year old. That's what I did and I didn't have to remove any screws or take the dash apart at all. The local dealer gave us an exploded diagram of the printed circuit board that all the lights screw into. We could see where the replacement light bulb had to go. My son could reach in behind the dash and remove and replace the bulb. I stressed that the old bulb had to be twisted 1/4 turn ONLY!! to remove it and the new one had to be turned 1/4 ONLY!! clock wise and that too much force could break the circuit board. We had a lot of fun doing the research and tracking down the right bulb as well as figuring out which bulb needed to be replaced.

He's 17 now and his hands are bigger than mine, but no more burnt bulbs since!

BTW for a floor shift auto is there a bulb for the PERENDEEAL (PRNDL) indicator?
If so how do you get to it? All my 10 year olds have grown up!
