I pulled the 351M out of my 77-1/2 F-250 4X and am installing a strong 400 Cleveland. So far I've been to Auto Zone and Napa trying to find a replacement motor mount for the driver's side. Both sold me a flimsy piece of junk with a little decal saying "made in India." Absolute GARBAGE! I guess I'm going to have to return them and go to Ford to get a REAL motor mount. Pathetic!

So—we're going to have this discussion again, eh? ;-) Okay, I'll bite.
The 400 Cleveland came out in 1971 and was called (correctly) the 400 Cleveland. In 1975, the 400 Cleveland was destroked and the result was called the 351M, to distinguish it from the 351 Windsor and the earlier 351 Cleveland. The "M" terminology only became associated with the 400 after the advent of the 351M, because they used all the same components other than cranks and pistons.
The ongoing battle over what the M stands for, or whether the 400 was a cleveland or not was not the point gents.
I'm thinking that I'll do some carpentry on Saturday morning and build a cradle to lift the block via oil pan from the front while I change the motor mounts on what I believe we all agree is a 351M.
As I have no instructions, I was only seeking some tips and or warnings regarding steps or procedures to follow...i.e. do I have to remove the starter? It doesn't look like it, but I haven't put a wrench on it yet.
I've changed motor mounts by simply putting a scrap piece of 2X4 or 2X6 under the pan sump and raising the engine with a floor jack. Loosen both sides even if you're only replacing one.
BTW, my original comment was meant constructively—watch out for these ubiquitous made-in-India motor mounts; they're incredibly flimsy.
OK gents, now it's Monday morning. Thought I would post back here in case some other fool decides to do this job.
While it is not entirely necessary, in hindsight it would have been a good idea to remove the solenoid to starter cable. It gets in the way. Also, the oil dipstick assembly on the oil pan. Possible to work around them both, but rather difficult.
Do NOT let stupid people help you. Prior to lifting block, I was checking for clearance at various points. Fan and fan shroud came to mind quickly. My friend pulls directly up on fan shroud without removing any bolts of course. My radiator popped like a soda can. I realize that it was therefore close to failing anyway, but sheesh, that added $160 to this job rather quickly.
Oh well. Took me a day and a half, two helpers, and one radiator, but new motor mounts are in. I put the truck on the highway and hit 83 mph then took my foot off of the hammer and had NO shudder. YAY!
