It's electronic, but doesn't use the speed sensor on your rear diff; it's got a sensor plugged into the back of the tranny where a cable would go.
I can't think of any reason for it to fail, other than something that came unplugged, but if you end up having to replace the gauge cluster, I believe you can just swap in the fancy one with the tach (assuming you don't already have one) without having to do any extra wiring.

Now I'm really at a loss. Speedo started working on the way home, quit working about 3 miles into the trip. Odo quit working also. Haynes manual states the speed sensor is in the diff. Have not had a chance to get under it yet. Keep ya posted.
