Has anyone used or heard of the Jacobs Ultra CMD coil and Milage Master system? We've got one of these sitting on the shelf at work that I can have, is this worth the time to install or will it even work with my ignition system? The truck is a '78 F250 400m.
I'm thinking about using one of their systems, but haven't convinced myself that I want to spend quite that much $$$$. But, if it were given to me, no question, it would go on my truck. Why don't you try it out and let us know what you think?
Just like everything, some guys like Jacobs, some don't.
hi Dustin, yes i'm currently using the Jacobs Mileage Master system . i have it installed on my 1989 Ford F-350 1-ton single rear axle 9000 lb. g.v.w.r. it has a 351 with automatic trans. this truck weighs right at 6,000 lbs. that's with a spare tire and one of those diamond plate tool boxes in the bed. it's a heavy 1-ton. before i put this on i was getting around 11.2 to 11.5 miles to the gallon. and after putting it on and after re- adjusting timing several times to get it to perform the best it was just under 13 right at 12.7 miles per gallon. now i know your probally thinking that this is not a very big increase. it's big in the long run when your tooling down the interstate, but when you can make it another 40 miles on a dual tank set-up i think it's worth it. especially in this truck. of course drafting behind truck drivers always helps too. very simple to hook up. that's my case study. take it easy the weekends finally here!!!!!!! later, C.J.
About a year ago, I called Jacobs to just ask a few questions about their products so I could make my own decision about which ignition to buy for my '77 F-250. Instead of answering my questions, I felt like they were trying to force their stuff on me. The prices for the system I was interested in (the "Ultra Team") was about 2X as high as an MSD 6AL and coil. They told me they would make me a deal since I was skeptical and sell me a demo model for less. Against my better judgment, I did it. They guaranteed me a 25% increase in gas mileage.
I installed the system (as bad as I hate to admit it, it was very easy to install), but couldn't see any performance increase over the factory system. Mileage actually was a little worse, and I deliberately tried to NOT change my driving habits to make the test as accurate as possible. I DID notice that the truck started quicker, though. I ended up sending it all back because I felt like it was too expensive and didn't improve the performance or mileage as they said it would. One other thing, they stuck me for a $40 restocking fee when I returned the system.
Not long after I returned it, Summit started carrying the Jacobs line in their catalogs (still more expensive than MSD). I now run MSD and am very happy with it. MSD's customer service department is very professional and helpful also. Jacobs' customer service people sounded like they were very young. Made me question their experience. I'm new to this site as of today. Bear with me if I goofed up with the reply. Hope this helps.
I noticed when getting info from Jacobs that their numbers for my truck were a little off....They stated that the 351m in my 78 4x4 f250 came stock with 250hp.
Yeah right!!! More like 150hp!!!!
This would seem to work against them, wouldn't it??
Weldman
PS - what is the hp and torque numbers @rpm for the 78 351m??
Run the "off-road" in the big truck with a 460, run just the ultra coil in the little truck with a 2.0L. Once I got the plug gap "dialed" in on the big truck, just runs better as far as consistant A/F ratio, starts much easier and improved mileage, about the same CJ's, from 11-12, up to 13-13.5 depending on how I drive it. Once again, doesn't seem like much of a gain, does make a difference over a tankfull (44 gal). The ranger always had this really annoying miss at 1500-1800 rpm, that cured it along with most of the other benifits, most noticable when there is 1200 lbs. of coal in the back. Would not have puchased this for this truck, but came across a deal I couldn't refuse! Very happy I didn't.
