I had my wife's '00 Taurus in to the dealership for a Tranny flush 2 days ago and was told that Ford recently issued a statement telling the dealerships to us Mercon V - exclusively! That is; to use it in place of Mercon and Mercon III in all applications. Does this sound right? Has anyone else heard this? My Expy calls for Mercon III, so should I use Mercon V?

This is correct. All previous fluid recommendations for transmission previously specified as Mercon (no such thing as Mercon III) have been superceded.
projectSHO89, thanks so much for the information that you provide. I stole the link from the thread that you mentioned. Hopefully this will come in handy for somebody:
This is interesting development. I remember reading about members in this forum panicking and demanding from dealership service shops to flush Mercon V out of their trannies upon learning that V was used when the dipstick and manual calls for just plain Mercon. And there were lots of talk regarding this subject in this forum, how V can mess up your tranny, yadiyadiya. So what now? Should I go V or use Mobil 1 synthetic (which is Mercon) as I planned next time I flush my tranny, since my dipstick and my manual call for Mercon .
Thanks for the info guys! The TSB says you can now use dual use fluid (MERCON/MERCON V), even though the manual says: "Using the dual use fluid will cause a hail of hell-fire to rain upon you" (or something like that). It sounds like a go-ahead to use Amsoil, Mobil I or whatever to me...
