As mentioned above, there is absolutely no reason to buy an aftermarket intake system for these trucks as the oem setup is more than adequate. Many users have shown in the past that all these systems do is make more intake noise and lose hp due to sucking hot air. Your best bet and what I did for my 5.0 is to pick up a K&N drop in panel filter (or equivalent) and take a trip to the local junk yard. Look for a truck in these years with the inline 6 motor. The snorkel goes from the airbox to a cutout next to the radiator which is guaranteed to pull cold air. The tube only cost me 6.00 bucks. This is the best performing and most cost effective way to gain a couple hp via the intake.
I have the K&N FIPK on my 93 supercab w/300 c.i. My advice is, DON'T DO IT! The only thing I gained with the kit was more under hood noise and a lighter wallet (the cost of the thing and less gas mileage.) Yeah it looks cool, but unless you are keeping the r.p.m.s so high that you need the amount of air an open element will flow, you will be very disapointed. The stock settup with a good filter does a much better job as you are using large area ducting for the intake and not overfeeding the engine with air. The air/ fuel ratio really gets knocked out of whack by using the open element without remapping the fuel injection.
Trust me, I just bought a used one off eBay for $70 including shipping. I have a 5.8 and before it had no top end. With the K&N it has a great top end. There is no effect on the bottom end and I cant even hear it sucking air until 3/4 throttle. The sound is great at full throttle too boot. I would strongly reccomend this intake.
its all in your head. If you look at the actual kit, the tube is just a big, if not smaller then the stock ones. You can get the little fipk kits thats just the filter that connects to the stock hoses and gets rid of the box, as mentioned, but your sucking air from the engine compartment which is hot.
I also did the inline6/460 intake duct. $5. Took 2 minutes. 2 bolts from the stock duct. I was thinking about fabbing up so the stock one is cut into the 460/inline 6 one. Just for looks really. It sucks plenty of COLD air in...
On my 87, i just bought a universal filter, took out the air box, fabbed a bracket to hold the filter, and just hooked it to the hoses. Works great, I actually did see a 1mpg increase, and it does have a little more get-up-and-go. I wouldnt buy the intake, paying 300 for a piece of plastic instead of rubber doesnt make sense to me, but the filter was worth trying, and im glad i did.
Picked up a snorkel tube (lines up adjacent to the radiator) and the bottom end of the factory airbox from a '88 460 for $9 at the local pick 'n pull. I would have replaced the whole box and filter, but I need the single inlet tube with the EGR junction. And I haven't found one at any of the junkyards yet (oem $150) and wish I didn't toss out the original box.
I've had the k&n fipk for a couple of years now, and have only noticed a WOT noise increase. I did manage to squeeze the giant k&n filter into the bottom portion of the old 460 air box with the air duct attached. Not sure how much of a difference it makes as of yet, but now there's definitely SOME cold air running into the filter. I did notice my rpm's drop slightly (100-150) on the freeway at 70 and a bit more responsive on the throttle. Can I attribute this to that new air duct? Anyone....?? Bueller?
Don't buy the kit. Hit up the local pick 'n pull for an '87-96 460 or I6 air duct. Oh yea, thanks for the ideas guys. Wish I read this prior to purchasing that filter element.
Does anyone know why Ford put the air box snorkel on top of the radiator on the 5.0 and 5.8? It seems like it wasn't completely thought through. Also, if they only had one snorkel then it would make things cheaper to produce, I would think.

Maybe it was to have us smallblock owners dig 'em out of a wrecked 460 or 300? Doesn't make much sense to me either, but I am glad I did find an old duct and box from the bigblock cousin. I still wish I read this thread prior to buying the k&n fipk kit.....
