i have a 2003 ranger xlt, fx4, 4.0, auto tranny with o.d. and 51k on odometer. would it be good maint. to change the transmission fluid and filter, or would i be wasting my time and money?some say yes, some say no. what are your thoughts on it?.thanks for any input.....bob
Ford recommends changing at 30,ooo miles. While the pan is down you can check the valve body and the valve body gasket. The transmission pan gasket can be reused if you are careful when you remove it.
At your mileage I'd change it either way, but if you want to check it to decide, you can. If it is dark brown and has a burnt odor to it it needs changed. But like I said, I'd change it now anyway, especially if you are going to do it manually. Unfortunately, when you drain it manually, you can't get it all out, so that's another reason to change it at recommended intervals. Nowadays many shops do the change with a fluid exchange machine that gets it all. I think it is cheap insurance for an expensive component. My two cents.
The Tech Info tread atop this forum has been pulled down for now, so you can't access it, but I think you get the idea on how to do it.
I mark my pan gasket, so that I get it back on EXACTLY as it was removed.
I also used spray brake cleaner to clean the magnet & wash the pan out. DON'T use linty paper or rags!!!! Then I placed it upside down on clean news paper, to keep it clean, until I was ready to install it.
If you decide to do it yourself, let us know how it goes.
thanks for the input guys. you confirmed what i thought was the right thing to do.i,ll get it taken care of this week. again, thanks for helping me out......bob
