I have a 2001 f-150. I have installed a 2 way radio (HAM) and i belive i am getting rfi from the fuel pump. Before i start the engine i turn on the radio, then turn the key but i dont start the engine and i get a short burst of noise in the radio, then when the engine is running the noise gets worse.
Any one else have this problem? or now hoe to fix it?
Sounds like you need to ground your radio better. A bad ground will pick up interference from alternator, fuel pump, basically most things that resemble and electric motor. Try a better grounding point/cable.
Of course, you might just have an electrically-noisy pump motor that is emitting RFI due to brush/commutator issues and the RFI is radiating and is being picked up by your antenna and not through the vehicles electrical system.
I'd also check the integrity of the antenna base ground assuming it's a hard-mount, not a magnetic or groundless mount.
