External balance was 79 and newer I believe. You can easily identify an external balance motor by looking at the spacer behind the balancer: smooth, round spacer = internal balanced; hatchet spacer = external balanced.
Scottie, how do you know it's a 78 casting? is that what the emission tag says or are you seeing a 78 casting number? Mike is correct 79 is when they did the switch but some casting numbers look like D8TE but that number doesn't exist is why I was asking.
i have seen 460 lima motors in the John Deere chassis MH's with steel cranks. twice infact. threw me for a curve. but so did that EFI f700 with a carb adaptor and motocraft-holley 4180..
Stormy, you might want to look at those motors again, they were 429s not 460s, and the 429 truck motors did have steel cranks. The 460s never had a steel crank from ford.

yes they are bigger diameter snout, and the dampener is a lot larger too. the main and rod journals are the same diameter though, and the snout can be turned down to passenger car size, but with the new forged cranks coming onto the market the real question is why spend the money to have it machined.
