chrome restoration tip

If you have a small interior part (like a radio tuning ****) that the chrome plating is peeling or wearing off, there is a way to save it rather than replacing. Sand off the old plating to smooth (at least 400 grit) and then head to the local hobby shop. There is a product called Bare-Metal which comes in chrome and now brass and stainless. What it is is a sheet of thin metal with an adhesive backing for about $6; instructions are included. You cut it out, place and smooth it over the old part, trim off the excess and buff it. It really looks like chrome, not like like that garbage in the spray cans that always ends up looking like dull silver. It is great on little plastic parts that aren't available. And it will cover the finest identations, just be patient and work carefully. But if you screw up, you can take it off or just recover the area again.
