I could use a little advice on a washing machine. It will not adgitate at all, the adgitator seems as though it is frozen...It is not like a broken belt, it will just not turn at all....Some sites refer to a broken belt, or a loose belt, or possibly a switch....It is still so pretty, I hate buying a new one if I don't have to.....lol....Help if you can.....Thanks in advance....Nomadic
My wife's Matag washer / dryer (never go here again) was having some trouble with not spinning properly.
After a while, I noticed that it a was hit or miss problem and figured out it was the timer/switch mechanism.
Bought one at a local appliance parts dealer and it solved the problem nicely, but it was EXPENSIVE. Cost over $90.00 for that cheap bunch of plastic and recycled tin can contacts.
At any rate, for both of you, check out the timer switch. If you are lucky, you can find a wiring diagram online that may help troubleshoot the problem.
P.S. Washers have a transmission that has electric controls off the timer which controls all of the operations in the cycle. Just because you cannot move the agitator by hand doesn,t necessarily mean the transmission is faulty. Ours won't move by hand either.
Did I mention to check out the timer/switch?
I would suspect the transmission. Not that I'm an expert on appliance repair but in my experience when the agitator won't move, then it's usually because the transmission has gone bye-bye.
Is there anything under the washer like black rubber looking material, if so your transmission is probably out and it is cheaper just to go ahead and buy a new one.
Did you feed the squirrel in the cage that turns the agitator?
If it's old, you might want to think about getting a new one.
Ours kinda does the the same thing.
The timer is on it's way out, so the transmission won't engage until the timer is in position.
When it goes, I'll buy a new washer; it's a 39 year old Sears Kenmore.

What brand is it???
What model?
Manufacture date?
Does the washing machine run, other than the agitator not turning?
Is there a spot or puddle of oil on the floor, under the machine?
Any black, sooty (or rubbery) residue?
You don't give enough information/description to tell what it could be!
Someone might be tempted to say that the 'Overhead Muffler Bearings' are siezed, or, the 'Wobbling Pin' is loose.
First check the timer. If it isn't that, then most likely the repair will cost almost as much as a new washer. Mine did the same thing about a year ago and it was the transmission.
Thanks for the advice gentlemen....I will check under the washer and see if I can find any residue or anything that could have to do with the transmission....The washer is not that old, but it was kind of a cheapie to begin with....Everything works great with the exception of the agitator....I guess I could get the wife to agitate with an old broomstick and save the price of a new one....What do you think? Again. . . . .
What brand of washing machine is it? What model? What is the manufacture date?
The serial # would help, too!
All of this information should be on the machine, on a tag, somewhere near the lid, or just inside the lid.
Without this information, everything will be a guess. A guess won't fix the machine.
