However, can't the DIY guy pull the axles and separate the pumpkin and take it to the guy with the right touch in order to save a little money and time.
Probably not. The carrier needs to be installed in the housing to be able to set and check the pre-load.
I get it, NFW will I do this job at home. Don't guess I really want to trade out the gears anyways as it seems a PITA. Doesn't seem to be that much of an issue w/ the towing I do. Gas mileage is great thou . . .
Along this same line, I have an 05 6.0L, crew cab, SRW. I am doing a 6 inch lift, cutouts and 38x13.5's in early December. There will be an exhaust, filter, and maybe a chip, but i'd rather not use the Edge chip. I used an online calculator to figure out I should get 4.3's to get close to stock gearing. Would anyone make the huge leap to 4.56, or stick with 4.30's?
The truck gets 60% highway to 40% offroad miles in northern canada.....miles and miles of forestry roads and rocks and mud. I only tow a 16 foot enclosed with some toys if I need to.

I personally went with 4.30's with my tires (measuring 35.6 inches tall). Just got the truck Friday with the new gears in, and it's a big difference on the bottom end. The biggest surprise for me was the difference in EGT's while driving. They've dropped about 100 degrees cruising uphill on the interstate. It definately helps when the engine isn't lugging at low rpm's.
