Silly quick question.. how much does a 53 v8 flathead weigh? I'm thinking about buying an engine stand to help with the rebuild... 750# 1000# or !200# stand? Money IS an object.
Thanks in advance.
I would bet that the Flathead weighs less than a Y-block!
Go here http://www.team.net/sol/tech/engine.html for a listing of engine weights ............
Sometimes a quick google search is quicker than a silly quick question!!
Regards,
Rick

A V8 flathead weighs in the neighborhood of 650lbs fully dressed. I shipped one to Switzerland by Air freight a few years ago and that's what it was on the scale.
I wouldnt put a lawnmower engine on one of those TipOMatic 750# stands, just asking for big trouble. I know several locals who have lost expensive engine parts and even blocks when they tipped over.
I mount flatheads on a 4 wheel 1000# stand, full dressed it weighs around 550#. Fine also for various small blocks
My Y blocks and other heavy boatanchors go on a 1250 # U shape stand; super stable. A full dressed Y weighs close to 700-750# so putting one on a similar rated stand is pure insanity. A FE is about the same weight as a Y.
The Lincoln 430 for the F3 is on a 2000# stand just to be safe, that is the heaviest post war car V8 made.
If you plan to buy on Ebay be sure you know what you are buying, read the details in the description and ask questions. Some on there are pure garbage thin wall crap with square wheels.
I'm just gonna weld some training wheels on it to make it a little more stable.
