Speedo problems...revisited

Ok, so, My 86B2 was having speedo probs. When driving, it would read about 20 mph over, at level cruising, it would peg to 85mph. I got a new speedo cable and replaced today. When I took the old one out, you could see that the plastic pin that attaches to the needle was worn to a toothpick point. Took her for a test drive and now the speedo needle is bouncing. It seems to be reading the correct mph but you can hear a "rubbing or clicking" sounds as the needle bounces, almost like the gear is not engaged.
I checked my cruise control and it works fine so I am not leaning towards a problem with the speed sensor or gear.
Gonna look for kinks in the line now and re-lub and attach at the face plate.....Anyone have any tips for me? Any chance its not hooked in the back of the speedo correct?

Yup, racking my brains out now. I just re-installed the speedo cable. There are no kinks in the line what so ever and it is a smooth run back to the transmission.

I am wondering if it is in the part on the tranny that the cable plugs into. The back of the speedo, when moved by hand is really smooth, but when driving, the speedo needle still bounces between 5-10 mph around the speed driving.
what is the name of the gear that the speedo cable goes into on the tranny that is by the electronic speed control? I am thinking that may gear be the culprit.

Since there were no replies, I figured I'd tell ya'll were I'm at. So the speedo is still bouncing. I figured yesterday I would try to isolate the problem to either the speedo itself or the speed sensor. I removed the cable from the speed sensor and placed it in a variable speed drill. Using a very slow RPM, I had the needle moving very smooth from 0-80 mph. No bounce what so ever. To me, this shows it to be the gearing in the speed sensor. I think I read somewhere that the gearing inside is plastic so that would make sense if it was getting stripped.

Just an FYI.

it sounds to me like the plastic gear inside the tranny is stripped out or has some missing teeth on the gear. on some automatic tranny's you can remove the tailshaft housing and get to the gear for replacement/but not sure about the tranny that you have

I'm not sure what tranny it has. It is an 86 XLT, 4X4 with an auto transmission. I did some research and saw that the speed sensor also has the gearing and this could be the problem. Attached is a pic of the part on the tranny that I am going to order. Whatcha think?

The gear attaches to the speed sensor with a clip.

On my 87 theres one bolt that holds the speed sensor in place. Remove that bolt and pull the sensor out of the trans.

On my 87 the gear had a couple of broken teeth.

I had to call 5 or 6 Ford dealers before I finally found one that had the gear.

Thanks, I'll check it out his weekend. I wonder if it would be easier to find the teeth at a transmission shop???

Yeah, if i had'nt found it at the dealer a trans shop would have been the next thing I tried.

BTW, the gears are color coded different number of teeth are different colors.

You need to match colors/tooth count to keep your speedo accurate.

K, so I pulled the speed sensor this mornign and checked the gear. The gear looked perfect, no broken teeth or visible wear. I ordered the speed sensor yesterday so I should have it by Wed fr install. The only rhing I cxan think of if that does not work would be the speedo itself. Can you replace the guts to the speedo? I half "A'd" looked around on-line and did not see anything for sell like that, but figured I would cross that bridge after I replace the sensor.

In that case , it looks like my72ford nailed it and the gear in the trans must have some missing teeth.

All the sensor does is pulses voltage to the ECM, so changing it probably wont help.

Hmm, well, i already ordered the sensor so I'll install anyway and see if I can see the gear inside the tranny while I have it pulled and check the teeth. guesss I better hit the search feature and did around to see how to change the gear in the tranny itself. not sure what tranny i have exactly, so I'll have to research that as well.
Nothing is ever easy is it?
