Bouncing speedo needle on a 94

Ok, I've got my "new" 94 EB Bronco, I already love it, but I do have a question about my speedo needle. It's ok for most of the speed range, but when I get on the expressway and get to over 65mph and try to hold a constant speed, the needle tends to jump a bit (+/- 1 or 2 mph). This normally wouldn't be a problem, execept when I try to use the cruise control, that jump in the needle is transfered to a jump in the actual speed, giving me a less than smooth ride.

You guys have any ideas on what I should check, or is this normal? I know with the amount of highway commuting I do, cruise is a real help with the gas milage, so any help would be appreciated.

We had a post on this a few months back. You may have to search for the other posts, but in summary:

Several people (myself included) have experienced similar problems. The quick-fix is to replace the rear-end speed sensor. This is where the tranny, speedo, cruise-control and ABS all get their speed info from. In some cases this may help, in some, it may not.

Someone also posted about a TSB which described how the rear-end bearings can wear and allow enough movement between the "tone ring" in the rear end and the sensor. This can make the pick-up of the signal unreliable and cause fluctuation.

Maybe some of the other people that were having trouble can chime in if they got it fixed, too.

Is that rear end speed sensor a part you can get from a Napa type place, or is that a dealer part? I might as well give it a try, I don't think it would hurt anything to replace it and maybe that might help out the problem.

I had trouble finding that part at any of the local auto stores. I went to Strauss, Pep Boys, and AZ with no luck. I eventually ordered it off of fordpartsonline.com . Everything went smootly with them. I don't know if it would be easier/less expensive to go to your local dealer, but that was just my experience.

I got it at the dealer for $12; it's not expensive. Ask for the ABS sensor.

I think mine was about 15. Not very expensive and an easy item to replace.

Same here, one of the very few items that are actually cheaper from a dealer than a parts store

Thanks for the help so far.

I checked with fordpartsonline and found these 2 sensors listed. So what is this other "vehicle speed sensor"? where is it located?

VEHICLE SPEED sensor, F150-350, Bronco 92-98 $42.47 $33.98
Electrical - Powertrain control - Vehicle speed sensor

or

REAR SPEED sensor, F150-350, Bronco 92-98 $18.33 $14.66
Brakes - Anti-lock brakes - Rear speed sensor

I'm going to check with my local dealer for the rear sensor and start with that. Its cheap enough and I figure after 134,000 miles, it wouldn't hurt to replace it anyways, and I'll see if it helps any.
