Could be it's time to clean and lube both the cable and the speedometer head.
The cable is easy, the speedometer, not so much. This usually involves disassembling the unit, cleaning out the 30+ years of crud then lubing everything up and put it back together.
Those things always crumble at the slightest touch.
I think they changed the chemistry in the molds, after '80 it's not so "crumbly"
.. true Montana but I have been lucky 2 out of my 3 trucks.. but that one bad one was leaving crumbles in the floorboard way before I even pulled it out
