Would it be possible to convert from a distributor mounted TFI module to a remote mounted TFI module without having to change out other things such as the computor, etc??
I have never tried this or looked into it much, but I have been wondering about it lately...
I was thinking that maybe I could do this by cutting the harness and soldering in more wire to make the harness long enough to place it elsewhere. That would cover the harness issue. And for the 3 connectors that go into the distrubutor I could maybe come up with 3 male connecors that are just like the 3 on the module, solder on wire to them and on the other end of the wire solder on female ends that will mate to the male ends on the module. one end of each of these 3 wires will go into the distributor and the other end goes onto the module once it is re-located.
I'm pretty sure you can't just extend the wires and make it work. The remote mount TFI trucks have about 6 wires from the distributor....check out the diagrams comparing the distributor mount and remote mount TFI module wiring on fordfuelinjection.com. I've got 165000 miles on my 87 with a distributor mount TFI and I've never had any problems with it......knock on wood.
How about this: Buy a new TFI module, and replace the one on the truck. Keep the old one in the glovebox with the tool for replacing it.
Then you're covered.
Cheggie, did you read the post?? I said solder...not butt connect. I also said that if doing something like this won't work for whatever reason that I would carry a spare as well as tools in the glovebox.
I have thought of a remote tfi myself but in the last 18 years I have replaced it 2 times , so I am comfortable with the set up. If it is a matter of extending the existing wires and using the same module and putting it in a cooler place I don't see why it wouldnt work.
