Pickle fork

Might sound like a real newbie question, but what the heck does a pickle fork do? I know what it looks like, basically a tuning fork with a chisel end, but why? How would something like that help getting a ball joint out, or do whatever it is that a pickle fork does?

Aids in separating parts that are pressed together. Like ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. Crude but effective.

You hammer it in between the two parts held together by the ball joint, with the stud of the ball joint in the middle, and it wedges the two parts apart.

They do the job well but usually rip the boot in the process.

Pretty little colorful replacement boots are available at some parts stores and speed shops.

no Aaron, you are supposed to use a tie rod separator for spearing pickles out of the barrel.

The screw type rod separators work best if you have the room to get them in. I have had the aftermarket ("Help" section) split appart just hanging on the wall unwrapped. And be very carefull using pickle fork after a few suds, you might crack your front teeth.
