California Emissions System

There is a 2006 F150 that I am interested in purchasing, but I noticed that on the window sticker that it has the California Emissions System option listed. I live in New Mexico, so It is not required here. My question is, what is the difference between the California Emissions and the 49 state emissions and is there a difference in power, fuel consumption, and maintenance?

This is a good question. My 04 has the California Emissions System as well. Maybe that could account for the really bad mpg I get. Anyone out there getting 16 to 18 mpg highway, is your truck non California Emissions? This might be the reason some of us are getting 13 mpg highway, and others are getting high teens. It also might explain why my 5.4l is such a dog.

I just checked my window sticker, and there is no mention of California Emissions. I'm in Florida..

I just checked a dealer in California and the window sticker on one of their trucks lists California Emissions.

I contacted a service advisor at the local Ford dealer about the California Emissions and she told told me that there is no difference other than a few settings such as timing and Air-Fuel mixture, but I find that hard to believe. I will continue to research this. Apparently there is a thing called "Adjacent State" where states next to California are starting to show up with this option. The truck that I am looking at is in Arizona.

It is a good question. My 2005, which is capable of 20 mpg (hand calculated) on the highway, does not have California emissions. And without more definitive data/specs, it's difficult to know just how much the California engines are choked down.

I contacted another service advisor at the local Ford dealer and he told me that there is significant differences between a California emissions and a 49 state emissions F150, so significant that you cannot sell or register a 49 state vehicle in California.

Subscribing.
Hmmm... this is interesting, my 2004 5.4 is also California Emissions equipped. I also do not get great mileage, although I wouldn't say that my truck is a dog. Anyone out there know the exact differences?

there are some differences none of wich should effect fuel mileage that much. They have to use a more expensive/different material type of seals in the engine to keep fumes and such out, I believe they have a carbon trap in the intake which will not allow fumes to excape out the intake after shutting off the vehicle as well as some other programming changes, also there will be a greater warranty on some items

The really big difference is the sticker on top of the engine saying California emissions.
If the new vehicle, being sold in the state of California does not have that sticker. You cannot register the vehicle and they will demand removal of the vehicle within 30 days. I worked for a company that bought all of their vehicles in Il. They booted my vehicle out of the state even though it passed emissions.

Don't forget the California fuel difference! They oxygenate the fuel to reduce emissions, which further lowers mpg. They even screw around with the diesel fuel sulphur content, there is just no getting around anything here.

You were mis-informed. You can register and even buy a non-california (used) car in california, provided it passes the emissions test and just about all the new vehicles today will pass. My 88 ford F-150 wasn't California emissions and it passed several times over the 16 years I had it in California.

Now, there used to be a $300 inpact fee CA charged for registering non-California vehicle, but it was found to be unconstitutional in the courts and California has been refunding all those fees for the last several years to all that paid that fee.

As to the gas mileage. My 2004 Lariat 4x2 consistently gets 16 city and as much as 20mpg on the highway and it has California emissions, so I don't believe the California emissions has anything to do with mpg... I believe, truth be known its all in the settings of the computer. It would be interesting to know if there are any additional emissions parts.
