I've got an 05 Exp XLT 5.4. Bought it new last year. In the past few months I noticed that in more enclosed spaces (e.g., my garage) I can really hear a ticking noise from the lifters (okay, I read somewhere that these don't have lifters, but you know what I mean). I took it back to the dealer and had them look at it. They informed me that nothing was wrong with it and it was simply the way the engine was designed????Anyone ever hear this? Did Ford really design an engine to be that noisy???
It is noticeable when in an enclosed area or at a drive-thru but it is normal. I actually hear it easier if i'm sitting in the driver's seat rather than standing outside the vehicle which doesn't make sense.
I can really hear mine at drive-thrus as well. It's just more annoying than anything else, simply because I wouldn't expect it as part of an actual engine design. Really sad part is that DH's F-350 V10 6.8 is quieter than my expy! Go figure.
Well, at least it is good to know I am not the only one with this irritation. Except for that, and the fact that you cannot vent the third row windows like I see on older models, I love it. Just wish they could do something to improve the gas mileage...
I had lifter noise once when I used 10w30 oil, I changed to motorcraft 5w20 synthetic and the noise immediately went away.I think the expy was designed to run on a lighter oil only.
They're is a TSB under the F-150 concerning this and it includes the Expy. It may be cat converter light off which is normal for my engine. It is normal but they have a kit with some type of noise suppressing blanket that can be wrapped around the cat converters. Still need to crawl under and see If I've already got those. TSB does say it won't make the tick completely go away.
Sorry mixed that TSB up. The one I was talking about is for the 4.6L. It has steps to determine if it is coming from the cat converter area. One of the corrective actions is to replace cylinder head depending on the results of the verification steps. The TSB you all may be interested in is 06-4-7 under the 2005 F150 but it covers the expy both 4.6 and 5.4.
They're really not lifters because of the OHC design but rather hydraulic zero lash adjusters. Mine does the same thing but at 156 thousand miles should I switch to the lighter 5W-20? I put Mobile 1 5W-20 in my wife's Honda Pilot because it calls for it.
I don't recall it being recommended in my '97 Expy.
