Different buying choices

Ok so I know I am going to get a diesel, the only thing is Im not sure what to get. I have been looking at 00-02 7.3 diesels with the manual transmission, because I hear they have the most power in those years. I also am going to be choosing the manual transmission, because I have read up about the auto transmission having some problems, and needing to be replaced after 220,000 kms or so. So now here is where I have the choice. I have come across a few 04's with the auto and the 6.0 diesel in it. Now I know there was tons of problems with the 03's, but what about the 04's? Was there more power in the 6 liters with the auto transmission or less then the 7.3? What about fuel mileage, general maintenece, etc.? My father just bought a 01' diesel with a 6 speed manual, and all I know Is his is stock, and I would like mine to have more power with little, or no mods, like maybe just a chip, to begin with anyways! Thanks for any info you guys can provide me!

Yes the auto's in the 7.3L is the weak link. However get it built by BTS and that's the last tranny you'll ever have to replace.

The 6.0's have a bad rep from several recalls and service issues. However it is still a small minority of folks that have had problems with them. You can still break down in a 7.3L, or any Cummins or Duramax for that matter.

The 6.0 makes more power than the 7.3. Put a chip, intake, and exhaust on a 6.0 and it will run like nothing else. You'll need several thousand dollars worth of go fast goodies on a 7.3 to match or beat a chipped 6.0.

That being said, I love my 7.3 and I won't trade it for a 6.0, period. I suggest you test drive both trucks with different tranny configurations and see which one you like best. It's all about what feels good to you and what you are comfortable with behind the wheel.

Oh ive driven both, and tehy both feel alot different then my f150! I know I like the 7.3 with the 6 speed, hated the 7.3 with the auto, and I loved the 6.0 with the auto. I just dont want to get a leman with the truck having a 6.0 in it! So I wasnt really sure if they were bad in 03, or if that went into 04 too.

You will see alot of people here or on other ford forums stating they have problems with this or that. People don't seek out the help and knowledge (usually) until something needs fixing. I found this site when my glowplugs went out. So when you read about the 6.0 and all the problem trucks you are not getting the feedback from all the happy 6.0 campers.

I've driven the 6.0 and really like it. I almost bought a 2006 until the dealer offered me $12000 for my truck. If you buy used ask for an Oasis report and check the maintenance history.
