Accidentally filled with gasoline......oops!

A buddy of mine here at work just got a call from his wife. She accidentally filled his Duramax with gasoline and then drove off. She is now stranded on the the freeway somewhere in Houston. He was asking me what he should do (besides going to rescue her) and I thought I would turn to you guys. Is the motor smoked now? Is this going to be an expensive fix? Where does he start?

I would likely guess it is in big problems now... gasoline in a diesel is a very bad thing...

between the preigntion due to gasoline's lower flash point and the lack of fuel lubricity, it may be serious, but it could be just a matter of injectors and cleaning the fuel out, if it is still cranking, it has a chance at survival, but it sure won't do it any good.

Being gas is a very dry fuel probably messed up the IP, burned a piston or two. Hopefully the computer shut it down and needs to be reset. But that is being optimistic at best. Worse case - get a new engine. Wish I could give better news but it is BAD news giving a diesel engine gas.

He left to go and rescue her and I haven't heard back from him yet. She made it quite a ways (about 15 miles) before the truck quit on her on the Hardy Toll Rd in North Houston.

I was thinking it cannot be good. With as far as she made it I bet there is some severe engine damage done.

Have it towed to a shop or your house if you plan to work on it yourself. Do not drive it anywhere.

You'll have to drain the fuel tank, as well as bleed out the fuel lines. Replace the fuel filter, and fill the tank with diesel. Also put in some diesel additive to help with lubrication.

After that, fire it up. You'll know in a matter of moments whether or not you have any lasting damage. It may smoke for a minute and possible clatter a bit louder, but after a minute it should quiet down and run like normal. If so, take it around the block and test drive a short distance. If all is well you are ok. If it continues to smoke, clatter louder than normal, run rough or whatever, you probably have at least injector damage, possibly more.

Good luck.

I had the same problem with my PSD. I just drained the gas out and filled it with diesel and changed the diesel filter. It started with a lot of smoke but after about 1 minute, it was all good to go. I dont know how it is with CHEVY engines but it sure didnt damage my ford.

I filled up my 96 with gasoline once, drove a couple blocks down and noticed it was laggin real hard...couldnt figure out what was wrong. Just happened to look over at my receipt and saw "bronze gasoline"!!! so I cyphoned out both tanks and filled them with diesel. Fired it up and let it idle a while, since it idled fine with the gasoline, and drove back to the hotel. Woke up the next morning and drove the 600km home. Truck runs fine, but I wasnt cruisin down the highway running on gas.

It'll be fine. You have no idea how often my fellow firemen put gas in the diesel ambulances. We always have them towed to the dealer, but nothing serious is every hurt. Except pride.

This happened to our 2004 Excursion, our recruiting staff had done the same thing, all we done at our shop (I work at a Vehicle Maint. shop) is like a previous post had mentioned, dropped the tank, emptied the gasoline, drained the fuel lines, replaced all fuel filters, filled it up with some fresh #2, added some stanadyne and went from there and it hasn't missed a beat since, hopefully the duramax wasn't toasted, those things ain't cheap.
