no power

i bought my 2001 7.3 with 113000 kms the other week from a auction and it has problems so i took it to a mechanic.first symptom no power and white exhaust all the time so he said the caytalitic converter is clogged so he takes it out but before he put the new one in he drives it to check and it has black smoke and very little power in 1st gear so he did a diagnostic check and came up with a injecter problem or a injecter wiring problem.has this happened to anybody or should i be looking at other problems that might arise any help would be greatly appreciated my only other option is to soak it in gas and dry it with a match haha.thank you

Clint, you need to post the codes. It could be a glow plug relay or glow plug problem, does it do it all the time, even after warrm? Could be the UVC harness. Could be ICP, IDM, boost leak, fuel leak, faulty fuel pressure, needs oil change, bad fuel or fuel filter etc etc. Give as much detail as you can.

Hey Tenn, what is your thinking behind the glow plugs? Just not getting cyl warm before the workout? Im just curious. My first thought with white smoke is low compresion attributed to two things. A bad fuel pump will not produce enouph hot gasses to get the turbo up to speed, map sensor unplugged really gets them upset. Return with black smoke says fuel is not being burned at acceptable levels. More than likely its not an engine issue just a fueling issue. Once again quoting my felllow enthusiast Suck Blow Squeeze Bang Blow its the Blow part that may be at risk.

O yeah to check the injector wiring problem and eliminate 2 troubleshooting steps is to run an ohms test from the Injector control module harness. This checks the wiring from start to finish and likely shows that the harness under the valve cover called the uvc loses a clip and has a connection loss. I know first hand about the previous post and uvc open circuits.

Dunno. White smoke all the time then black after pulling exhaust??? Got me stumped. I thought black smoke was too much or unburned fuel. How does pulling exhaust change the entire symptom, well except low power? It would seem the fuel may be getting there but maybe an electrical short. You are correct, the GPR and GPs will only affect initial startup. I was thinking perhaps a short in the harness but this will usually affect the idle and it will run rough. That low power does indicate a boost problem, I just can't figure out the different smoke color and injector code thing.

Yeah any mech that says there is a problem with a cat is really not thinking through the process. Troubleshooting seems to be a thing of the past.
White smoke is low compression-----fuel pump, map sensor bad or unplugged, boost tube off, hole in cylinder, bent rod, not firing cylinders, excessive uvc problems.

Lots of black smoke is unburnt fuel----malfuction with fuel pump ( starts to rework), injectors streaming fuel instead of misting, injector oring leaking by, back pressure sensor acting up, and the turbo not spooling for compression

You see sometimes its hard to troubleshoot without a computer to monitor, but our trucks only need two things, the computer just makes minor adjustments. Air and Fuel.
The turbo winding up is a result of the expanding exh gases. Not enouph and she dumps more fuel in hense black, then not enouph expanding gas and white since the turbo cant spool up fast enouph...we had this same problem on a 00 dually that the pump was bad and plugged. Ran great for a mile heavy black then all white and stumbling, would not go faster than 40mph then wouldnt even move until canister refilled and away she goes. I lost a hose to my map sensor and I thought her world was coming to an end. Wouldnt rev up and all white smoke, plugged her in and away she went. Ive gone through all of this. Including leaving the manifold sensor off the front of the pass side front and getting hot temps and little boost and alot of black.
