Making up my mind

Maybe next year or before that I am going to put a new motor in my 62 f-100. The thing is I have kids and they like to eat.(lots) I am on a tight buget so to drop over $3000 in a motor won't happen. I have a 240 in it now and it is a horse. It is not fast but has some pull. I can have it rebuilt for 1,500 and maybe put a cam,4-bar.carb, and maybe some split headers for some more horses. Or maybe drop a 302 in it and not have to change the trans.
I love the 3 on the tree and the 240 is a good motor for my use. What do you think?

Honestly, If your really operating on a low budget, I would rebuild the 240. Seems a little high for 1500 to rebuild the motor. You could get a carburated 300 or 302 for under 1000.

Do not know what section of the country you are in but right now in my area there are two 300 CIDs for sale. One in a wrecked truck that the owner swears runs like new for $600. for whole thing. Other one was supposedly rebuilt 12k miles ago; asking $500. Should be able to "freshen" a 240 for lot less than $1000. if you do the work. IMI, If you like the low speed torque of the 6 cyl. stay with a 6cyl Good luck,

I would stick with that 240, rebuild it right, may be add a small cam, & that 4barrell, headers you mentioned, a word of caution on carburetion, most folks with 240s & 300s generally use a "small" cfm Holley, like a 390 cfm, some have tried the 450 & its too much, so ask a few people before buying your carb, Good Luck!!

FordFan.
I have a suggestion for you. There are a lot of old 6 and 8 cylinder Ford truck motors out there cheap. Find yourself an old 240, store it in the garage and start buying the needed parts a little at a time. It is way easier to part with $50 for a gasket set or $100 for a new set of pistons every week or two than to shell out hundreds all at once. This gives you time to shop around and look for bargains.
One of our Slick 60's memeber even found an old 3x2bbl carb setup for his 292 V-8. Look around and NEVER get in a hurry. Like my old buddy John Wilkerson says, "why run down and get one when you can mosey down and get them all".
