Hi and welcome to the site!

The 289 will bolt up as long as it's a 6 bolt block. You will need to use a 289 or 302 (before '82) flywheel though. For motor mounts, the 302 came stock starting in '69 so they're available. Same deal with the headers, use the one's for a '69.

You can get the mounts at any auto parts store. It's the perches you need, off any '69 and later pickup with a 302. If your truck has power steering, you need the correct driver's side perch. The one for power steering mounts in the forward holes and the one for non-power steering mounts in the rear holes. When you are done you will notice the 302 sits very close to the firewall, that's normal.

I would say '69 - '79 should work.

And while were on the subject, I am considering the same swap but I can't remember where the break was for the early blocks with the different bell housing pattern. I have a 289 fom a 66 mustang that I want to put in my 68 that is now a 240 C4. I have never swapped in a 289 to a 2wd, but have done 6 cyl to FE and 351C in 4x4s and only ever had to move the towers. Some of the holes weren't always drilled but otherwise I never had a problem

I believe the 5 bolt to 6 bolt cutoff was somewhere between 64-65. A 64 Comet I had used the 5 bolt, and a 65 mustang I had used the 6. I did the same swap years ago in a 67 Merc 1/2 ton. It worked real well, even used the 240 clutch and trany no problem. If the flywheel you get for the 289 is the same diameter as the one on the 240 (it should be) then the number of teeth on it will not be a problem, both are the same.

"all 260s and early 289s were cast with only 5 bolt holes at the back to attach to transmissions. I’m guessing around ‘66 they added the 6th bolt hole, which was the norm until production end "

thats just something i read

so all i would need to do is find a fly wheel the same size as the one for the 240

i was thinkin i was gonna have to drill new holes for my perches i will find out soon i am 4 bolts away from having the 240 out and the 289 is at the machine shop being cleaned , bored and havin the cam bearing pressed in, oh freeze plugs to
