Why was the neighbor with a hole asking you for dirt?
Is the neighbor with the basement just wanting to store the dirt there for a week or so until he needs it to backfill around the foundation etc or is all that dirt for the small hole???
There will be a big cleanup job and new sod to be put down later. If it rains you will have mud everywhere...
Eric, The ONE neighbour asked the contractor at the house 2 doors down for some dirt to fill a hole.
He then asked Minnman if the dirt could be put beside his own fence on Minnmans property so he wouldn't have far to wheelbarrow it to the back yard.
The contractor abliged by dumping what looks like 3 truck loads from a small dump truck.
It appears to me there was communication breakdown on HOW MUCH dirt the guy wanted to fill this hole in the yard between the nieghbour and the guy with the excavator and dump truck.
So Minnman comes home to practically all the dirt that was excavated from the basement being dug out on his property instead of the actual amount that was required.
I guess the question is for the neighbour......How much dirt did you actually ask for ?

I have been trying to ask him.....but funny he's not around.
Had a chat with his kid today he's about 23 year's old.
He told me his dad also wanted some dirt for his rental property.
Seem's like I assumed too much here....and should have asked more question's before I told him he could put dirt in my yard.
like HOW MUCH DIRT ?
I also feel like he bent me over.
I'm not sure what I'm going to say to him when I see him but it aint going to be pretty.
Your neighbor must have paid for it... They usually wont even unlock the tailgate without payment. So, worst comes to worst, just advertise you have clean fill and sell it off by the cubic yard -- It should sell real quick then just pocket the money. If anyting, a "Clean fill for sale" sign will get his attention and get him to contact you. A pile like that couldn't have been cheap.

Stick a For Sale sign in the pile with your number on it and see how soon he finds you to talk.
We are leaving out another possibility in this mystery, guys. What if the contractor knew the guy only needed a little dirt, but took the opportunity to just get rid of his excess job site dirt all in one place ? Or, maybe the contractor told the dump truck driver to drop only one load and he didnt listen so well ? ..
If it was me, I would get the whole story before I accused the dirt needing neighbor of any wrongdoing on his part. Nothing like good communication to keep things from going bad. It is a lot harder to keep a good neighbor than it is to make a bad one. jmo
My First Question would be:"Did you ask for this much dirt ?"
That was my first question he said no and he was in shock when he saw it.
He said he cant sleep worrying about all the dirt and what to do.
My 2nd Question would be:"How much did you pay for ALL this dirt ?
I guess that's the bright side.....all of the dirt is free.
Maybe the contractor has a better Idea of how much dirt he is going to need to fill his back yard and make it flat.
I going to have to call the contractor myself because my neighbor's english is poor.
Maybe I will rent a bobcat and do some landscaping in my back yard.
I could maybe use up half of what's there.
Try to make some lemonaid out of the lemon's.

There ya go. If the neighbor hasn't been a bad guy up to this point, and he seems to be bummed out about it, do you have a good reason to doubt his sincerity?
Looks like both of you will get some use out of that pile, and it didn't cost anything.
