Woodruff Key...I lost it
I'm a *******, I lost my woodruff key in the gravel.
I need a new one, so I went to TSC to try and eyeball one out.
Figures, they have a bunch of sizes.
Any input on what I should get?
I was thinking of getting a bunch and just seeing what fit.
Thanks,
Blair

That's funny, I still have on sitting in my desk organizer from a few years back when someone else asked the exact same question
I don't have my calipers or micrometer handy though ...
Just to make sure, it's the one on the crank for the damper, or the one on the crank for the timing chain gear?
And get that paint out of your mouth

Hey Krewat,
It's the one for the dampner. How frustrating to drop something like that. Next time I'm putting my motor together in the basement.
Thanks,
Blair

It's 1/4" square by 3/4" long.
More accurately:
.2515" square, .751" long.
It's an interference fit, hence the extra .0015 on the width. The length can be just plain .75 (or 3/4) inches.

This:
It fits into the crankshaft, and the damper has a matching groove. Keeps the damper from spinning on the crank shaft

Yeah, same here I guess. :)
I always thought of them as being a half moon shape and the square ones (like the one pictured) being a "key".

Could it have fallen into the timing cover while you were pushing the balancer on? Can't remember off the top of my head if there's room for it to get past the seal.

No I don't think so.
I think I need a half moon one at that. I bought a square one like in the pic, and just test fitted it in the end of the groove.
But it appears that the notch on the crank stem is a half moon and not rectangular.
Thanks,
Blair
