The truck I bought has the steering wheel welded to the shaft. What do I do with this? Also, their is a grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
Hi, if the grinding noise is in the top of the steering column inside the cab I would suspect that whoever welded the steering wheel on cooked the bearing on the shaft unless you can get the weld off I think you are going to have to replace the whole column. Even if you get it off the shaft is probably trash and you will have to find another one. John
You don't say what year truck you have, or car. However, fatforty is probably right about the bearing being fried. My suggestion would be to take a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel and carefully cut the weld away from the shaft. As a guess, I would say the shaft is ruined, the reason it was welded in the first place. Unless they lost the nut and just welded it as an easy way to replace the nut. This could be a real problem, as the shaft is integral on 64 and older models. I think that my 64 has splines on the shaft and if the wheel is left loose those may be ruined. I would try the dremel tool and a steering wheel puller before I gave up on it.
Good Luck,
Rich
Mr q_ball, I am assuming that you are talking about your recently purchased '66? If so, can you tell if the nut is still on there and welded to the shaft (on the end), or the shaft welded directly to the wheel (unlikely)? If the nut was used to pull the wheel back on the shaft, and then welded to the end of the shaft, you could use a grinder to grind off all the weld, and then back the nut off. More info would be helpful...
Yuck! Sounds like someone buggered the threads so they pitched the nut and welded (or brazed) the wheel to the shaft. If you can get in there with a dremel or other grinder, grind off the weld/braze enough to get the wheel off. Then I doubt that the steering shaft from that point down to the rag joint is gonna be salvagable, unless you can get it re-threaded. You may have to replace your steering wheel as well, depending on how careful you are when you grind off the weld.
Any one else have a suggestion??
You also mentioned something about a "grinding noise". Can you tell if it is from inside the cab (as suggested earlier) or outside? I know that when the kingpins get gaulded on my '64, they can make quite a grinding like noise when making a sharp turn.....
Wow, so that makes 3 now? A '64, '65 and a '66?! I wish I had your budget/space!

Nothing, and I mean nothing, stirs the soul, saying I'm a bad **** like lettin'em rip with a window shaking, fuel gulpin, carbon monoxide belchin, attention gettin, V-oh my LORD!-8!
The grinding comes from the steering wheel. You can feel it when you turn it. I'm sure the king pins could use some work though too. Their is also another noise. When I am moving I get this little clicking noise on the passenger side in the front? I have no idea what this is. Maybe that is my king pin.
