Well, reverse problems are usually the first indicator that a tranny is going bad, so I would have it serviced since they are a bit tricky to work on yourself.
Mine did it, and I took it to Cottman's Transmission - the reverse band has 2 tabs on it that actuate the band. One had snapped off and dropped down into the pan - but it's absence prevented the band from clamping down on the drum. Replaced the band, tranny worked fine.
Same problem two weeks ago. Took it to Bethlehem Ford dealership for repair. They replaced the transmission but had problems with colum shift binding. Tilt sterring nuckle came loose according to their tech.
Note: They did not indictate that a band tab had broken on this unit. A day late and a dollar short.
R/R transmission Ford rebuilt - FMCXL5Z7V000EARM List $2215
After reading through the forum, the possibility was that the reverse had a broken tab. This trans has two shift tabs and possibly one was broken off. At this point they replaced the trans saying is was bad and made no mention of replacing or repair the reverse band.
The called to pick up the truck after they had allegedly road tested the truck. We went to pick it up and we could not get it off the lot. The shifter bound up and we could not get it into Drive. We had to leave the truck and the next explanation was the linkage was loose in the steering column; ergo that was another two hours mechanic labor. Yet when we brought it in, there was not problem with the column shift lever.
Not a happy camper...their service write out and out lied to me.
Hungry techs at that stealership. On trannys and exhausts if you can find a local [not franchise] reliable shop that specializes just that you hopefully avoid this unfortunate saga. Honest franchise the next best bet, if the techs are busy. If its slow, watch out.
My 2003 ranger wouldn’t go in reverse today, found too bolt of brake caliper broke, and when I went in reverse the caliper would fall backawatds following the rotor, and locked up the wheel

Dealers!! yep haven't gone to a dealers shop in years..they have a pretty bad reputation..from customers and my friends and relatives who are mechanics and have had to work for dealers..I'm sure some are good..but many are not
I bought a new Ford 2017 Mustang last year..and I asked the dealer to put me on their "no call" list..I'll do my own maintenance and such and keep receipts for parts/materials etc
If I have a warranty issue..then yes of course..but probably won't or I'll take it to them if I do..but I don't expect a warranty issue
Y2k 3.0 4x4 tranny wouldn't go into reverse last spring, took it to a tranny shop 2wks later rebuilt because something let loose , cost $1900 runs good now.

I actually had something similar happen to me. But one broke such that it wouldnt go forward very well, but backed up ok. My situation was compounded by the fact that the brake caliper wore the rim enough to cause to to leak air and then had a flat tire to deal with too by the time I got back with the stuff to fix the caliper situation.
