No reverse lights - switch?

Hi guy's,

I've got a 2008 Ranger FX4, 4.0L with manual transmission.
Recently I noticed that I have no reverse lights. I have to parallel park on busy streets from time to time, so this is a safety issue that I need to fix.

I checked the bulbs, both seem fine - would be unlikely that both bulbs would die simultaneously. I checked the fuse. Again unlikely unless the reverse lights were on their own independent circuit. 10A fuse looks fine too.

Last thing I can think of is a switch. I checked my Haynes Manual, there is no mention of it, which is odd, usually my manual is quite good.

Any idea where the switch is located? Any experience with swapping this out?

Thanks!

Thanks for that. He didn't say if he had an automatic or a manual. No idea if it makes a difference under there or not, I haven't looked yet.

Go out there with your DMM (get a $5 cheapie from HF if you don't have one) and see if there is a good ground on one contact and +12V at the bulb socket when it's in reverse. If not, use the DMM to check for +12V at the reverse light switch and for continuity of the switch when the vehicle is in reverse. The switch will be located on the tranny, and schematics for the entire vehicle are available at no cost on bbbind.com I would encourage you buy a copy of the factory service manual as these are the holy grail for information and are, of course, used by professionals who have no time for missing and/or crappy info. Haynes is to auto repair what a rattle is to a baby.

Got it. Was the switch - ended up pulling one from a scrap transmission. There is enough room to access it if you have the right socket.
Interesting little switch, its a ball switch looks pretty robust, but for some reason mine died.

Thanks FTE forum
