new to the site here, and to older trucks, but definitely in need of sound advice from the wisdom that seems to reside here.
the truck: 69 f250 w/ 360
the sypmtoms: sputtering upon starting and driving at any speed range. occasional backfiring when accelerating and decelerating. when driving it will run as normal, then speed up for a second every five to ten seconds. at highway speeds it will maintain itself without the sputtering, but still exhibits the little boost every five to ten seconds.
someone told me the carberator needed to be cleaned, but when i went to the parts store to get cleaner, and shared the problem, then universally said to replace the points.
Raymond, Welcome to FTE The nations truck stop
Congrats for your new found truck, hope you enjoy it.
Sounds like you have a little challenge there and as suggested let's start simple.
Points are a good thing to check out. There are several good electronic conversions available on the market, Petronix and Craine are 2 that are referred to here quite often. For about a hundred bucks you get a hotter spark that last for many years.
Check your vacuum lines for leaks, that is a simple and inexpensive repair.
As suggested, the fuel delivery system may need attention.
You could spend a couple hundred bucks, but I doubt it is anything very serious and you will be set for many miles of enjoyment.
Hm if you've done what these guy say and still doing the same thing pull all your spark plugs. lay them out in order so you can see if there all the same conditon.if Burning clean, or black fouled. Reading the plugs may tell you which cyl is not firing good or weak spark. Check each cyl compression before putting money in to it first. If they our all up around 110 and up not to bad. Check plug wires or just get new ones, Check the PCV, Old hard cracked rubber line leak and suck air when they get hot. Check carb bolts. Check all inside dist and coil for loose scews, wires ground wire in dist. Ckeck dist shaft side to side play. These our just good starting places You really need to get a motor manual that tell you how to do all the simple stuff to get you back on the road again..good luck...my 2cent

Also check Plug wires for leakage & crossfiring if worn out, cap for cracks, bad center primary brush (carbon thing in the inside center) or carbon tracking of electrodes. Also check rotor for general condition [carbon tracking, loose pointer, bad pickup].
I would tend to agree with the Parts guys as what you explain sounds more like it's ignition rated than fuel rated, although fuel problems can make for rough running too, but generally not backfiring.
Backfiring is predominantly timing related in the ignition system. I am not saying the timing is off or out of adjustment, I'm saying if ignition fires intermittently on random cylinders something is wrong in the ignition system. IE: points, condenser, cap rotor wires, plugs or coil, and cylinders are not firing in correctly in time & sequential order. One may be early others correct yet others late, all caused by faulty Ignition Parts.
The problem as you relate it is uncommon and rare with electronic or breakerless type modern ignitions, unless the cap, rotor, or wires, are leaking wet or bad. But is more common with points & condensor systems due to their mechanican function & inherent faults & limitations. aka the nature of the beast siro of thing.
I maybe wrong, but that's where I'd start looking for troubles if it was mine.
Thank you again. I'll check the ignition system as soon as I can. Have blown out the fuel line and the carb jets, which seemed to help marginally. I got the truck from a chap who was friends with a retired Ford mechanic. He went through most everything on the engine, hence I see that he went through the carb; there are new spark plugs, ignition wires, pcv, fuel filter, etc, but am not sure about the points. The distributor seems newer.
Any suggestions on the best manual for this F250 - 360?
