My 1987 Bronco II has been having trouble for about a month. It tends to sputter at any speed(idle-WOT)...And it backfires when i slam the throttle quck and let off. The sputtering is probably due to an oxygen sensor right? And i should change the plugs and wires of course. But what would cause the backfire? And another question..does anybody know if Pacesetter headers and y-pipe have the spot for an oxygen sensor on them?
I agree with pulling the codes. Something is amiss. You could also have a lot of gunk in your intake / throttle body, not to mention possible timing and ignition issues -- I am thinking more of a pickup/module issue. As far as the headers, I do believe that the Pacesetters have the O2 sensor bung on the Y-pipe.
> The sputtering is probably due to an oxygen sensor right?
No, a bad O2 sensor will not do that.
Most likely a bad TFI, especially if you do not throw a code or check engine light.
The sputter you described is many times lack of ignition spark.
The other thing it could be is a marginal charging system about to die that is borderline at 12 volts. Easy enough to test with a DVM and hand blipping the throttle linkage under the hood and testing the battery at rest and with a load test.
yeah my throttle body is a bit grimey inside..i will clean it soon...the truck isnt on the street at the moment so it doesnt matter what i do to it haha.
