For the past few weeks i've had an intermittant start/no start problem. When it does start,i hear (2) components running. (1) sounds like a pump(2) sounds like bacon frying, or like fuel injectors. When it doesn't start i don't hear (2).The truck has died a couple of times while driving..but will restart..Could this be the FICM ?? Any info would be appreciated before i take her in to the dealer.
You will hear the injectors cycle, vacuum pump, and fuel pump. This is going to be hard for the dealer to replicate, so the next time it happens, open the hood and grab the wiring harness and give it the shake test.....You have to start somewhere so this is an idea.

I would check the low pressure side of the oil pump. A friend of ours is standed in Iowa right now with this being the culprit of his injector failures since he has had his truck. It's an 2005. He has had his truck at several dealerships and the techs could not find what it was. He finally found someone who did. It was very hard to diagnose. They found out it was a faulty spring behind the low pressure oil pump. Just something to consider having a dealership look into.
Symptoms were:
very low psi of low oil pressure
extremely hard to start
several bad injectors

Exactly, when they looked at the scan tool you could see that there was only 34 psi of oil pressure on the low side of the pumps. Meaning there was no oil getting to the injectors to be able to fire them. There was also parts of an injector stuck in the oil cooler when they tore into it....
This is only a sugestion as to what it could be. It was missed by several other dealership techs at different locations. dieseldutt's dealership will have to be the ones to determine the problem. All I know is I hope for dieseldutt this isn't the case.
We have never heard the pumps on my 6.0 turn on. All I ever hear is the engine turning over and then the turbo spooling up. Maybe I am too distracted listening to the turbo. On the 7.3 yes. It is very clear when you hear the pumps turn on. The "clicking" sound as I call it is very noticable.

What seems odd..the engine performs flawlessly.. until these events..excellent fuel mileage..and nary a cough or sputter..it's going to the dealership tomorrow..luckily they have a decent tech there..we shall see..thanks all
This is why what has happened to our friends truck was so hard to diagnose in the first 4 times it was at a dealership. No codes. Didn't do this when the other techs looked at it. Conveinent huh?
BTW-have you had them or have you checked with a scan tool or some kind a diaganostic equipment see what your low pressure oil pump pressures(psi)were. It may be difficult as it is essential to check this when the truck is acting up. I am interested to see what it was.

Diane..Just so happens I have Superchips Max Micro tuner..The DTC's it found were P0603 (Internal Ctrl Mod kam error)and p1000.. The last code I assume is from disconnecting the battery. The 1st i have no clue what it means...Dan
It's going to the dealership in the A.M...I'll keep ya posted...

p0603 it's just the PCM detecting that there is a program installed. Nothing to worry about. p1000-OBDII port is identifying you plugging up the programmer.
