Hi all,
Just got my wife a 95 explorer XLT V6. The only problem I've seen with it so far is the temp gauge doesn't seem to work. It looks like it moves a little but not enough. Any one have any ideas? sending unit maybe?
Thanks
Hi, When I bought my 96 explorer I replaced the Thermostat because the temp guage would not go up at all and I couldnt get any heat out of it. It was during the winter months though so I'm sure now is a different story. If your getting heat it may not be this issue, but it was pretty similar to that.
I would do a good reverse flush, change the Tstat 196deg (Place the vent hole @12 o'clock), and fill with fresh fluid 50/50. Pressure test the cap. She with then be ready for the BC winter, LOL
We are rigged for Dive Rescue/recovery, so they get severe duty and carry lots of weight. They tow on a regular basis (16' flat desk). Transmissions are soft but we have learned to live with them.
Should you get in trouble with the Tranny "BENZ" in Maple Ridge have done ALL ours and I stand by them as outstanding.
Might check the connection between the sensing unit and the wiring. It's been known to look attached but be loose. A little contact cleaner might be in order. Sending units aren't that pricey or hard to replace, but I'd make sure there was a good connection 1st.
Does the heater work? That would help assess whether the thermostat is a problem.
One other thing - sometimes a new thermostat gets installed by previous owner that is set for a much lower temperature (for instance 165F vs 190F). That might account for the lack of movement on the guage.
If you know someone with an infra red temp tester, have them check the temp at the T stat housing, that would verify the temp before you tear it apart, if temp OK look at sensor, there are 2, one for guage, the other for the puter
