it doesnt look that hard to do. on the manual-shifting trucks there is just a linkage on an arm that goes up into more linkage and then in the cab. i would get the assembly from a wrecked truck, and pull out whatever you need. im sure the arm that goes onto the transfercase out to the hand lever will need to be salvaged. i also want mine to go also, it sucks in the snow.
Manual shift is a NV271, electric shift case is the NV273. You can interchange the two and add the appropriate linkage, but you cannot convert a 273 to a 271.
EDIT: I suppose you could convert it, but the manual shift case has a couple of support bearings on the sector shaft that the electric unit doesn't need, so you may have to split the case to add them.

Are you sure that the problem is your tranfer case? Or could it be the automatic hubs.
The hubs are known to go bad, and there are also vacuum seals behind the hubs that can rot out.
oh my, didnt know that. guess i will be keeping my switch along with bhiggins.
Kris, you could do it if you wanted to. The transfer case is very easy to work on. The hardest part for me was to have a spreader to separate the halves once I had removed the bolts. A Porta-power is the perfect tool for that job.
As far as the bearings that Cookie88 mentions I have no idea which ones are the correct ones, but with a little study you could find out the difference.
If this is something that you are thinking you would want to do, it's just as easy as pulling your turbo and dissassembling that, just ten times as big and heavy.
You can pull the transfer case in less than one hour, you don't even need to remove the crossmember. Drop the driveline, disconnect the linkage, remove the four bolts holding the case to the trans and it's out. You don't even need a jack, just manhandle it down.
You most likely saw this thread, but here's a link so you can see some pictures.
BTW I still have the diagrams that Touch of Gray sent me, if you want them I'll send them.
Kory,
Thanks for the info. The problem i'm having is when i turn the **** nothing happens. I've crawled under the truck and tried to listen to the motor on the side of the transfer case and don't hear it enguage or the selinoids click. the 4X4 light will not come on the dash. some times it will ...........some times it won't ........but when i need it ...........it wont enguage

Thats great info thats definatley great info and if i ever have to go into my transfer case that's one thing i'm doing while i'm in there
what would be the result of adding the linkage without the support bearings? is there a seal inside the transfer case that would be damages or are the supports for the case its self?
have you checked the relays to see if they're bad. there are two relays under the hood on the drivers side near the firewall. i just had a truck with the same problem and after hours of trouble shooting it ended up being a relay that had coroded due to what appeared to be excessive water damage. out of town right now and don't have my truck to check exactly which relay is s but there are two of them side by side
as for putting in a manual shifter the problem you'll run into is that the 271 has a neutral indent and the 273 does not.
Couldn't that be remedied with some careful work using a die grinder? Just put detent into the slider where the detent should be. I am guessing exactly halfway between the 4hi and 4low positions.
