blown engine 02 Escape

I just blew the engine in my 02 escape with 120K miles. Without looking at it the dealer estimated about $6,000 to replace it. They told me the new engine would be about $4100 + labor. I looked at Jasper's website and the engine is available from them for about $3200. I also found a used one at a local salvage yard, undisclosed mileage, for just over $1000.00. I am mechanically inclined and have rebuilt several small block chevys, a few air-cooled VW's, and replaced tranny's in chevy trucks, ford vans and trucks, and some old hondas. My question is how difficult it is to do the swap on an Escape, and with the mileage, does it make sense to just get the used engine for a thrid the price?

Welcome to the site frijoles. Some unfortunate circumstances have brought you here though.

Are you the original owner on the Escape or did you buy it used? Was all maintenance done on time with the proper parts/fluids (oil)? Do you have the 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder?

We should be able to help you out.

It is actually my brothers car. He purchased it used in early 03 with about 8,000mi. He has done all regular services every 3,000mi, usually at a quick lube service center. He was in the Colorado mountains when it blew, had started climbing a hill, it downshifted to third died and huge cloud of smoke. I found a piston ring wrapped around the passenger side axel. It is a 6 cylinder. He said there were no noises and all gauges were normal right before it blew.

I would consider a used engine from a salvage yard. Considering the popularity of the Escape V6, you should be able to find one with a reasonable number of miles on it.

So the block blew apart? How in the world did a piston ring get wrapped around an axle??

At 120k mis, I'd go the used route. You should be abe to find a low mileage engine for under $1000 and 2 handy guys can install 1 in a weekend. Take lots of pictures and label everything that comes off.

I'd go the used route too. A new $6k engine is about what an 02 Escape with 120k miles would be worth before he blew the engine. Hard to justify putting more money into the vehicle than what a used Escape would cost.
