My truck has no backup lights and I want to add them. It has the NP435 manual transmission. I have looked all over it and cannot find any place to install a switch. Did the early ones not have this provision, and can I drill/tap a hole somewhere to add one? thanks.
Charles, It could be just as simple for you to toggle switch them in. I know it would be cool for it to be automatic, but a under the dash toggle switch could be a lot easier to install.

In the cool still quite of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
Charles,How are you comeing on that 5831 install. would like to hear more about it.Ive had that same idea for some time after seeing a new ford diesel with one in it.Glad you broke ground first.
The toggle switch is a good idea. you gotta remember to flip it though. If you go with the toggle switch, install a light in the dash so you know when the b/u lites are on.
Am currently using a toggle switch for my automatic.BUT, when my '66 was a 3-speed, a long L-bracket was mounted on the fenderwall with a momentary button switch attached thru a drilled hole at the bracket end. When the truck was shifted into reverse, the linkage would press this switch, lite the lights (aftermarket type, mounted in rear where the optional factory reflectors went) and of course turn the lights out when linkage was moved. An easy, cheap solution to avoid the dash toggle......
Rigging a linkage would be nice except for one major problem - the shift mechanism for the NP435 is completely contained within the cover. I suppose I could run a string from the shift lever to a switch Anyone got a later-model cover they don't need?
The cover you need is easy to find - probably more common than the one without the switch - and cheap, if you keep your eyes peeled. I found one on a loose trans in a scrapyard and got it as a throw-in. I might use it eventually, but didn't put it in just yet because I know the shift rails etc in the one in the truck are excellent. The cover I got was on a Dodge trans.
