I have a 78 short bed 4x4 with the NP435. The cast iron housing is cracked and I need a new transmission. So here are my two questions:
The non-divorced 435 is the one I need for my truck correct?
And I know this is a subjective question, but what should I expect to pay for a NP435 that is in working condition? I located one locally but the price seems a bit high to me.
I got a NP435 for $280 at the local salvage yard. If you edit your profile so when you post it states the state or city you live in it may allow people to tell you if they know of good deals local.
As far as the Divorced/married question, the easiest way to determine which you have is to count how many driveshafts you have under your truck. If its THREE (one from transmission to transfer case, one to rear end, one to front end then you need a divorced
If the transmission is bolted to the transfercase (theres an adapter there) then you have a married set-up.

He is in VA.

Married or Divorced?
I want one for the divorced set-up with the boss for the 4x4 shifter. I bought a 2wd one a couple years ago, but I did not want to have to fab up a mount for the T-Case shifter so I sold it.
78 4x4 should have a "married" or connected transfer case set up and there for same for the trans. Looks like this? 1st 2 pics are a NP435, 3 rd pic is a Borg Warner T-18.
I can buy a NP-435 with NP-205 xfer case for $150 all day long, but then again I am in the mid west.
NP435 = aluminum top cover w/8 bolts
T-18 = cast iron top cover w/6 bolts
Warranty Plate TRANS code: A = NP435 (N-1965 only) / F = Warner T-18 / P = F350 Warner T-19.
Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.
NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.
To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it counter clock wise to remove it. (Its spring loaded and twists into place, we removed one and it was a 2 person job. Put the trans into 2nd, 4th, or reverse, then one person holds the cap and applies pressure, twisting in a counter clockwise direction. The other person hits it from the top with a hammer to get the cap to go in below the two clips that hold it in.) People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out the pins.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I am in Northwest Virginia. I have had a tough time finding these between here and Pa. No junk yards seems to have them and if they do, they're 4x2 or divorced.
As far as the local one I found...the guy wants 600. That seems really high. Apparently he's not real big on coming off of it either. But it's local and convenient.
Being new to this hobby and not being the most mechanical guy in the world, I am not really in a lot of circles to find this stuff. I spent one night looking through the classified section here, as well as did an internet search, and I'm just not seeing a lot of them for sale.
