I was wodnering if anyone could confirm that the factory installed brake controller plug under the dash of my 1999 Expedition is not functionable.
I bought a controller, then bought an adapter that wires to the controller and plugs in to the brake plug already there. I then installed the trialer plug in the back. Needless to say the brake controller is not coming on.
I have heard that sometimes the factory installed plugs stop at the fire wall unless you got the tow package with your vehicle.
I was hoping the plug worked to avoid having to wire the whole thing but I don't think it does. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'll tell you that is a good theory (wiring stops unless you have the tow package) but I didn't think you got the circular plug (in the back) unless you had the tow package.
Let's see if there are others here that is more knowledgable than I.
Check your owners manual, I believe it tells in the towing section where to place the two relays. If your truck didn't come with the 7pin recepticle then the relays wouldn't have come with it either.
After further review and information searching I found out that the Brake Controller plu under the steering wheel is a "live" plug and all you need is the brkae controller, the wiring harness that plugs in under the steering wheel. Then you buy the splitter plug for the back of the truck which gives you the 7 pin connection and still gives you power to the old 4 pin that came on the vehicle. Thanks for all the help and information.
