I have a 1991 Ford F-250 XLT Lariat 4X4 with a stock 7.3 diesel with an E40D tranny. It has a shifting problem from 2-3 and 3-OD. It is almost as if it search's back and forth between 2 gears. First thing in the morning when the tranny is cold, it shifts perfect but the tach does not work at all. The problem seems to happen when the tach begins to work but even then the tach will only at 1400 rpm's and higher. When the tranny shifts back an forth the engine also revs up and down and the tach will be at 1800 rpms and go right to 0 and back again. If i accelerate at a faster speed, the tranny shifts but it shifts up almost as if it skips all of though 'half gears" in between and the tach goes down about 500-700 rpms instead of the normal 200. its not the speed sensor and the truck has a new tps sensor. please help. I am completely stumped!?!?
Replace the tach sending unit. Actually you can test the rpm sensor (tach sensor) w/ a volt meter.
rpm sensor disconneccted
Measure sensor resistance at the termial
Should be between 2400 and 2800 ohms
is that the one on the right side of the engine oil cap. (facing front of the engine) I replaced that one with one from another 7.3 and it did the same thing. i put myn on the other 7.3 and it worked. but i will check it out when i get home and reply again. thanks
i have also just found out that when i disconnect the tach sensor and go, it'll shift properly but a little rougher. I plug it in and it does the same thing over again. i tested the sensor and it wouldnt come up with anything. i tryed it on my friends 7.3 and nothing showed up on it either but his worked. so im going to check all the wiring going back and if i have to ill take that tach sensor out of my friends truck and try again.
