my transfer case on my 96 350 is making a grinding sound when i put it in 4x4.how hard is it to put a transfer case in anyway?it really doesnt look all that hard.i was thinking of getting another one from the local junk yard here, cause they want to much to rebuild it.look like i just take off those 2 small u bolts on the rear drive shaft and does the transfer case just pull out after that?not bad though this transfer case lasted for 9 years of hard work.
You must remove, or disconnect the rear and front driveshafts, unhook the shift linkage, disconnect the wiring plug, and then remove the six bolts that hold the transfer case to the extension housing on the transmission. Drain the transfer case first to keep from making a mess. It's an alloy case, but it's still heavy. Gravity will help it down, but it's better if you have a couple scraps of 4x4 lumber for it to land on when you pull it out. Putting one back in is simple, but I found I still needed a jack to get in position. It's not that I couldn't lift it - I just couldn't lift it with my forearms because my truck is not very high off the ground! Your BW1356 is suceptible to case wear where the oil pump indexes. It would be wise to take the back cover off of your replacement to make sure it isn't about to spin the pump. Look at the notch in the case where the pump body rides. It shouldn't be wallowed out to the point that the pump body will turn on the shaft. The case notch holds it in position so it can continue lubricating the bearings. The case can be welded up to repair it, but it's a specialist job because it's magnesium.
hey thanks for the info i forgot about the bolts when i posted this but the shop here wants to much money so i guess ill have to learn.i watched my buddy last year do his it really doesnt seem all to hard.guess ill try it thanks
The whole swap process is simple, it's just having the umph to get it up there. since its a 350 its gonna be harder to get it up there because its taller. Get a second set of hands at least for that. Drain it before you pull it, otherwise you'll do like me and dump who knows how many quarts of tranny fluid on the floor.
