Question Sooty exhaust pipe

Here's one for you.
Towed my 5er (11K) for the first time several months ago.
Cleaning up after the trip I found exhaust soot for the first time. Also my shiny exhaust pipe (achieved after a lot of fine abrasive applications) had turned a mottled brown which looked like evidence of high heat. Cleaned the inside and outside of the exhaust pipe and it has remained clean since, but then I've done no more towing.
My question...
Does this seem normal?
Could I be running too rich under load?
Should I bitch it to the dealer?
Your thoughts, please.
Thanks

The truck is running normally... not sure that I can say the same about someone who cleans the inside of the exhaust pipe.

normal . don't worry about a little soot as it comes from whats being burn't off inside the cat convertor. and change colors it will you should have seen how the 409 stainless on the mbrp system i tried turned from normal combustion heat after 100 miles. BLUE it went

Normal. The heat is from towing - the catalytic converter gets HOT trying to change all those hydrocarbons to soot and steam. The resulting heat goes where? Out the tailpipe

OK....I'm busted!
But you know I like my rolling stock to look show room new and I don't nind the work required to keep it that way. Of course now that i am retired, every day is Saturday(and with coffee breaks). The second benny I get is at time of sale; the buyer of my last(10 yrs old) truck was happy to pay well above market for it and even drove 150 miles to get it.
Gee!
Now I don't feel so defensive about my obsessive behavior.

A-r

There's a bunch of us A-R types out there. It's what keeps those places like Griot's Garage in bidness. My '02 Explorer with 122k miles on it looks nearly perfect. My three-fiddy will follow suit, and no, I do not believe in getting it scratched up so it can be a "real truck".

My tailpipe got that mottled appearance like you are talking about within a couple weeks, and I tried Cerama Bryte on it to no avail (the stuff works great on Lightning pipes). I figure one day I will toss a chrome tip on it...
