1998 Expedition EB Compressor Problems

hey whats up everyone....i got another problem that i was hoping someone can help me with....my truck had front end damage due to a accident and my compressor was damaged....it was replaced once but everytime it turns on to level the truck, the compressor is very loud and it shakes the truck ( the noise is really really annoying, when i have people in the truck they ask me what the hell is that).....so today i went back to the body shop and had the compressor replaced and still the same problem..they told me its normal, but i have never had this problem before...i was thinking when it turns on it may not be mounted right and that its hitting something....if anyone has any ideas i would really apperciate them......thanks again everyone...

Hey Joey, it's good to see you back. I do notice the compressor running on mine, but it should not be THAT loud and you certainly shouldn't feel it.

If it wasn't mounted properly (bolts too tight or they didn't use the rubber isolation washers) I could see where it would behave as you speak. It could also be a crumby aftermarket part which could be the case should the body shop be trying to make more profit.

Bottom line: take no siht. If it isn't right, take it back until they make it right. And if they claim the behavior is normal, ask them to show you another vehicle with LLS and see if you can tell the difference (I'm sure you can but this will give THEM the opportunity hear/feel the difference).

Ford has redesigned the mounting bracket. Several fairly recent posts have given the part number. It is about $60.

Silencing the compressor

Last Feb, in addition to replacing the compressor and the new bracket (which comes with new rubber grommet insulators), I went an extra step and put additional semi-hard foam rubber insulation pads between the truck body/frame and the compressor bracket and also added a rubber washer just between the mounting bolts and the bracket. I cut the home made insulation pads out of an old computer mouse pad and the rubber washers are the kind you use to mount a toilet tank to the toilet with (like plumbing washers). When I did all of that - plus the newly designed bracket insulators already in the bracket - I started up the truck and had to get out of the car, lift the hood, and put my hand on the compressor to convince myself it was running. If you do all of this, believe me, you will never hear that compressor running, it's a little scary actually. It's a better setup than when the truck was new. IMHO, I believe it will reduce vibration on the compressor itself and will help it last much longer. Hope this helps.
