In Dash Navigational

Has anyone tried to install a ford built in navigational system. This is the one that can be ordered in the navigator. This unit looks like it can be install because it is the double DIN opening. Anyone hear of one being istalled with any trouble it took.
I have a 2007 super cab, lariat with all the bells and wistles.

I don't have that one put in my truck, but I have a kenwood navigation with a kenwood double din touchscreen radio.

Navigational

I was thinking to use Ford's OEM because of the controls for the stereo built into the steering wheel.

I just did a quick search on eBay and it appears that the newest unit (at least the one you are referring to) is compatible with and Ford truck 2005+.

Looks like you're in luck. I'm going with the Pioneer Double DIN myself. I would love to get the stock Ford unit however. It seems like a much better fit and I'm a big fan of the OE look.

You can get an adapter for just about any aftermarket head unit that will allow you to keep your steering wheel controls...

I think one of the companies that make them is called PAC ? I can't remember... but there are more than a few out there.

ANY aftermarket double din will blow the ford factory out of the water... and look stock as well.

I'd go Eclipse if I had the $$ to spend.

Funny you say that. I'm supposed to pick up an Eclipse in dash unit tomorrow but am skeptical because it's a single DIN.

I know that you can get an adaptor for the kenwood unit and use the steering wheel controls. Also, if your interested, it gives you the choice of either XM or Sirius sat. radio. It has a dedicated input for a backup camera. And of course a slot for navigation. All of the above mods mention I can vouch for personally, I use them on a daily basis on my truck. I also have the kenwood music keg(which for what I use it for blows the whole ipod thing in the vehicle right out of the water, but thats something else).

Ah man... go double if you can afford the extra cake. You have all that space there, no sense in wasting it!! Plus it looks just like a factory installed unit.

I've been looking at alot of different double din dvd/navigation head units for a while now... and have narrowed it down to the eclipse avn6600... a friend of mine has one in his superduty... fantastic head unit as far as musical clarity and adjustability go, and dvd playback is awesome as well. The navigation isn't THE best in the business, but for the price you can't go wrong.

Also... I'm pretty sure that on the eclipse units, you can tap right into the steering wheel controls w/out having to buy any adapter.

Check 0ut my post in the audio video section on the Pioneer AVIC D2 double din unit I installed. I used the Crutchfield kit and harness, and the PAC steering wheel control adapter kit and the whole package works great. You can add DVD, rear camera, subwoofers, bluetooth, etc. Double din is the way to go. It looks like factory, and the higher end aftermarket stuff is so much better than the factory stuff for less money too.

I am sure sonically the after market units are better but i do all my serious listening at home. I would rather install an oe unit too such as from the navigator. has any actually sat down and figured out how to adapt one over - i am sure ford made it difficult. I am way out of touch with car audio so i wouldnt even know where to begin

Well guys... I picked up the Eclipse I was talking about. The unit is in great shape but after playing with it and testing it it's entirely too much for what I want. The unit has Dolby Digital 5.1 surround decoding as well as DTS, a built in DVD player, built in amp, touch screen, 8v pre-outs... It also has a seperate "brain" that is the size of a small amplifier that needs to be hidden somewhere. I really don't feel like going through all the hassle of installing this because I don't need this kind of quality stuff in the truck. I'd rather have a head unit that I can slide in and out of the dash. I'm beyond my subs, amp, auxillary wiring days.

If someone wants it $700 is what I'm asking; otherwise I'm going to toss it up on eBay.

Here's a link to it and it's specs: http://www.eclipse-web.com/av/av8533.html
