I've got a 77 F-150 4x4. I was wondering if putting ladder bars on the back axle would help with firming up my steering and suspension. I don't do anything crazy with my truck, but I noticed a lot of built up trucks have them and I'm just curious if they help that much. Also where would I get some? Thanks
Steering is a problem with the front end. There is tie rod ends, I beam bushings, king pins, radius arm bushings, springs, steering box and steering column bearings. And don't forget the cab mounts. Those can cause really strange steering problems. Replace it all for about $400 and you would swear it was a new truck.
As far as I know, putting ladder bars on a lifted 4x4 truck are to help reduce axle wrap. This is usually only a problem when you get to some pretty big lift and tire combos. I doubt that it would affect the steering at all.
Thanks, it wasn't an immediate issue, I'm just kind of fishing for ideas for next summer. I noticed when I replaced the bolts in my bed that the suspension was noticeably stiffer. Anyways thanks.

This is correct. It can happen with 2wd trucks with smaller tires too if they have high horsepower, low gearing, soft or tired leaf springs or longer blocks between the springs and axle. The bar simply prevents the axle from twisting on acceleration and hard braking. It will not stiffen the suspension at all. If suspension/steering performance is what you're looking for a good sway bar would be a better choice.
