I am looking at a 1977 Bronco to buy. I was wondering if anyone can decode the VIN for me? It is U15GL000032. I know it is a wagon with a 302 and auto trans, but I was wondering if you can tell form the VIN what gears it has and what size the rear axle shafts are (28 or 31 spline)? Any other info you can give me from the VIN would be appreciated also.
Thanks. Does anyone know what spline axles came in the rear of the 1977 Bronco? I have a third member from an F 150 with a 31 spline mini spool in it that I might want to use and I want to know if it is just a drop in thing.
Possibly the only thing different is the grease seals. I took out a bad ring and pinion that was 31 spline and put in a 28 and had to change the seals along with the axles. The housing will accept either one, but I can't remember for sure which way is which. I think the 28 has the seal in the housing and the 31 comes out with the axle??
The seals depends on which type of axle bearings are used. If it has a standard roller bearing like the original, then the seal goes into the housing.
If it has a tapered roller bearing such as a 79 full size would have, then it can be on the axle itself.
Judging by the rust near the rear wheel wells, I'm betting that there is plenty more in other areas. If you are close enough to drive to it to see it, that would be best. The listing says that the drivers floor pan has been patched which can mean the rotted metal was cut out and new metal welded in, or a new piece of sheetmetal was screwed over the old stuff.
If there are receipts for the engine work and the rest of the drivetrain is in good condition I would say that it is worth it if the body were a bit more solid. It may be worth $4K as is, but it is at the high end in my opinion.
On the other hand, I've seen them in this condition sell for $4-5k from the Bronco places simply because they are 77 models with all of the options. But that is from places that can sit on them for as long as they need to sell them.
The thing about it is that for Michigan it is practically mint compared to most of them around here. They aren't lying about this being the rust belt. It is supposed to be from Kansas originally but I am not sure how long it has been in Michigan.
I know what you mean about finding solid projects in the midwest. Seeing how the auction ended with it under $2700, I think you could get a better deal on it.
I wouldnt buy it. Take a trip down to Oklahoma. I know where there are a few in way better shape than that for that price range. You could easily be into that one for 2 grand more before you were done.
