Exclamation 1988 Bronco II - No headlights

3 days ago when I first bought the truck the headlights worked. Now they don't work at all. I know the headlight switch works fine because my parking lights work normally, but when I try to turn my headlights on, nothing. I've already tried my brights and that did nothing. The fuses are not blown. What could it be? Faulty wiring? I hope not, because I don't know anything about wiring.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

i had the same problem too. i'll tell you what it is. there is a short in the headlight switch that is located on the stering colum. take off the cover & tap it & it should come on. * note: i had to end up leaving my cover off, because everytime i put it back on the headlights go off & on.

hope this will help you out.
good luck,
Chris

My BII has given me a few headlight headaches. The first time, I traced it to a bad headlight switch. Note that headlights are an independent circuit from park lights. Just because the park lights come on doesn't mean the headlight contacts in the switch are closing. On another occasion, I traced it to a bad multifunction switch as wick972 mentioned.

Because the headlights are on their own circuit, they usually have their own fuse/fusible link. Be sure to check that.

I know it's tedious, but the proper way to diagnose this is to get a wiring diagram and a voltmeter and start testing the circuit.

With the drivers door open & the headlight switch at "park" do you hear the lamps on warning chime?

Pull the switch all the way out & do you still hear the warning chime??

Yes, I can hear the warning chime.

I took the column apart yesterday and noticed the brown connector to the top of the switch was melted. Could it still be something else?

Also someone had a 10 amp fuse in the 15 amp slot. I replaced it with the 15 amp fuse and they still didn't work.

Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like a short in the dimmer/multifunction switch is what melted that connector.

Does your wiring diagram show a red/yellow stripe (R/Y)wire between the dash switch & dimmer switch?

R/BK dimmer switch to low beams & LG/BK dimmer switch to high beams?

If it does, it's wired the same as my 87 & i can tell you how to test the dimmer switch with an ohm meter.

Yes they are the same, but I don't have an ohm meter. I will probably just replace it.

keep us posted.

If you had an ohm meter, another thing that you could check for is a short in that melted connector.

Hopefully it's not melted bad enough to cause that.

Good luck with it.
