My headlights don't come on sometimes but when I move the tilt wheel they start working. I probably have a worn wire in the steering column. My question is what color is the wire that controls the headlights, so I can narrow my search down alittle. What is the best way to remove the plastic around the column.
What A/Ox4 said. These trucks are known for rubbing and breaking wires at the top of the steering column.
Disconnect your batteries so you dont have to listen to the chime
Put your key in the ignition and turn to START but dont start the engine.
Look at the under side of the steering column just near the steering wheel..about 4 or 5 inches and you will see a little hole. In there you will see what looks like a small steel ball. Using a small phillips or something similar, push it up and pull the ignition tumbler out.
Then remove the 3 phillips screws on the bottom of the column and the housing snaps apart.
Tilt the wheel down and pull off the top half of the column. You will see the wiring there for inspection and repair.
Only need to remove the ignition tho if you are going to remove the bottom half of the column cover. This isn't needed if you are only removing the top half. Sorry.
I think. Trying to remember now which half the ignition is going through. Pretty sure its the bottom.
Just an update to the people that helped me. Took the steering column apart today. There were not chaffed wires the main plug gray in color on the top of the column was loose. So I pulled it out and bent the locking clips out a little bit so it clicked in a little tighter. Thanks for the help.
