I went to put my shifter in drive and the end of the shifter broke off, where the over drive switch is. Can I get the end at ford or do I have to buy the whole shift lever? I don't know how it comes off of the end of the shifter to put the new one on but there are some plastic teeth that are broke off and it has three wires from the shifter to the O/D button.
All that holds the shifter onto the whole shift mechanism is a pin. If you take off the upper column shroud, you should be able to get to it. You can probably get the new shifter at the dealership. I think they used the same one for like 10 years, maybe longer, so it should be a pretty popular part. But, if you don't mind used parts, check the junkyard. It's not a hard job at all. If you need a little more info about it, I wrote a thread about it a while back. I think it's called a/t gear shifter broken. Good luck. Hope this helps
Im finally going to replace my shift lever, but was wondering how to take the top dash panel off? I read that it just pulls off and I have to take the lock cylinder out and how does the headlight **** come off?
I'm not sure that you have to take the dash cover off, but if you do it does just pull off. As for the headlight ****, I think it just pulls off, but then again mine never had one to begin with. To remove the lock cylinder, turn the key to the run position and push in on the little pin under the lock cylinder. Then it should slide right out. You will see the pin under there.
I got to the pin that holds the shifter on but I can't get the pin out. I've tried pliers and i've even tried a hammer with a punch and the pin won't budge.
Mine just slid right out, but I also had the whole plunger and shifter assembly off when I did it. Maybe you could just try turning the pin with some pliers just to make sure that it's not seized up in that hole. But if that doesn't work, you could just take the whole plunger assembly off and get the pin out that way. It would only take you like 10 more minutes to go on and take that off. Just a suggestion. Good luck.
