1996 F250 - automatic column shifter end cap broke off?!
I did a couple of searches but I'm not sure what the cap at the end of the automatic gear shift lever is called apparently since nothing is coming up.
We picked up a 1996 F250 for towing and we love the old girl. This past weekend we were out camping and as I went to put it into reverse the end cap of the gear shifter on the steering column fell off into my hand like it was waiting for a chance to do it. It's hanging there by the overdrive switch wires now and the over drive switch is still working fine.
Is there a way to repair the end cap or do I need to replace the entire shifter?
The switch is available at NAPA, and I am sure other parts stores.. Ask for an overdrive override switch, it was only used with the E4OD transmissions.
If it has an OD off button, it is an E4OD. When I bought my truck mine was broken. The shift lever from Ford is like $80. It does not come with the little cap and button though, but since yours still works you should be okay. It is very easy to change out, just take the plastic off the steering column and you will see the pin that holds it in, there will also be a two wire electrical plug.
After a little research I found the NAPA part number ( BK 735-5375 )
It is showing to be an obsolete part, but there are several in regional warehouses.. My local store even has one in stock..
Mine looks totally different than that part. It's a longer cylinder with the word "overdrive" and a the word "off" that lights up if you toggle the switch.

Your shift **** may be broken then, this is the replacement switch,, Sorry I couldn't help...
That little end cap on your "long cylinder" comes off and the little button is inside there. It has 3 pins, one being a ground. The piece shown in the picture is just the end cap, what you need is the lever. Pull the end cap off and save that AND the button and go to your ford dealership or a junkyard and get a lever.
The lever, when I bought the new one I couldn't get the original end cap back on
This is the button inside the lever that you need to save. Note that the clear part is the "light", actually an LED. So save your end cap and button and go get yourself a new lever. I thought I had my old lever in the glove box but I am pretty sure it is in my tool box at home.
Yeah it is super easy to replace and yes it is the whole lever. It comes with everything except the end cap and button, thus why I told you to keep those if they still work. The LED in mine burnt out, so I just have to listen for the tranny to kick out of O/D.
